The Chord and the fawn was formed almost by accident when a melody sprung upon the mind of singer and ukulele player Dani Lewis while she was mowing her lawn. From there, the rest of the would be band was only a phone call away: she called up her cousin, multi-instrumentalist Angie Krube, and the Chord and the Fawn was born. Since then the Chord and the Fawn have been playing in and around the Minneapolis & St. Paul area, using Dani's pristine (dare I say: damn near velvety) vocals and restful ukulele strums and Angie's understated bell and flute accompaniments to their maximum effect in tight, beautiful little songs. These seemingly quiet and sparse instruments work together to produce a sound that is simultaneously gentle and powerful, soul-baring and soul-affirming.
Edible Onion is re-releasing their originally self-released, debut EP,
This Has to Be Meant to Be as part of a split 12" with Br'er.

(Review for split with Br'er) - "The Chord and the Fawn's Dani Lewis also uses the ukulele quite effectively as her main instrument... Lewis' vocals are equally longing, recounting every detail of missed connections with the titular character in 'Young Executive', or the painfully earnest 'Assuming Makes An Ass Out Of You And Me'. The arrangements are filled out tastefully with bells and occasional flutes, and while they're definitely more modest than Br'er, their directness reveals Lewis' uniquely eager perspective and extraordinarily rich voice."

"OIWT thought songs this classy-sounding disappeared with Billie Holiday. An elegant lullaby from Minneapolis duo The Chord And The Fawn, Love, Sex, And Rock & Roll has a jazz vibe, has tapping drums, has pleasingly forlorn woodwind and has the thistliest ukelele, and yet has but one reason for it's fabulousness and one alone: Dani Lewis' diamond-clear voice. As she tells the story of an abdicated lover via bouncy rhyming couplets, you feel the simultaneous urge to cry and inelegantly play backing vocalist at every thrilling crest."

"...in the debut EP by the Chord and the Fawn, the ukulele's local street cred is finally finalized. This Has to Be Meant to Be focuses its attention on the instrument, only sparsely embellishing it with a concertina, bells, a drum machine, and a kalimba, an African plucking instrument. An African plucking instrument plus a ukulele plus a drum machine? This is pop music thinking outside the guitar-shaped box. The five-song trinket is pleasantly topped off with Dani Lewis's swooning mezzo-soprano and her sprinkling of whistles."
